1Ti 3:15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. 1Ti 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

1Ti 6:11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. 1Ti 6:12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.

I. Paul's Charge Concerning Doctrine............................. 1:1-20

A. Paul's Past Charge to Timothy 1:1-11

1Ti 1:2 Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.

1Ti 1:3 As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,

B. Christ's Past Charge to Paul 1:12-17

1Ti 1:12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry;

C. First Charge: "War a Good Warfare" 1:18-20

1Ti 1:18 This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare;

II. Paul's Charge Concerning Public Worship......................... 2:1-3:16

A. Prayer in Public Worship     2:1-8

1Ti 2:1 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;

1Ti 2:2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

B. Women in Public Worship     2:9-15

1Ti 2:12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.

C. Qualifications of Bishops     3:1-7

1Ti 3:2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;

D. Qualifications of Deacons     3:8-13

A. Description of False Teachers 4:1-5

1Ti 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

B. Instruction for the True Teacher 4:6-10

1Ti 4:6 If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.

C. Third Charge: "Neglect Not the Gift"................... 4:11-16

1Ti 4:14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.

IV. Paul's Charge Concerning Church Discipline........................ 5:1-25

A. How to Treat All People     5:1, 2

1Ti 5:1 Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren;

1Ti 5:2 The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.

B. How to Treat Widows     5:3-16

1Ti 5:3 Honour widows that are widows indeed.

C. How to Treat Elders     5:17-20

1Ti 5:17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.

D. Fourth Charge: "Without Preferring One Before Another" . . 5:21-25

1Ti 5:21 I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality.

V. Paul's Charge Concerning Pastoral Motives 6:1-21

A. Exhortation to Servants 6:1, 2

1Ti 6:1 Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed.

B. Exhortation to Godliness with Contentment..................... 6:3-16

C. Exhortation to the Rich................ 6:17-19

1Ti 6:17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;
