OUTLINE OF EPHESIANS

Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Eph 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. Eph 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Eph 4:1 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, Eph 4:2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Eph 4:3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Part One: The Position of the Christian (1:1-3:21)

I. Praise for Redemption............................ 1:1-14

A.   Salutation from Paul     1:1, 2

Eph 1:2 Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

B.   Chosen by the Father     1:3-6

Eph 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:

C.  Redeemed by the Son     1:7-12

Eph 1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

D. Sealed by the Spirit........................... 1:13, 14 

Eph 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

II. Prayer for Revelation............................. 1:15-23

Eph 1:15 Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints,

Eph 1:16 Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;

Eph 1:17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:

III. Position of the Christian............................... 2:1-3:13

A.  The Christian's Position Individually     2:1-10

1.  Old Condition: Dead to God    2:1-3

Eph 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

2.  New Condition: Alive to God    2:4-10

Eph 2:4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

Eph 2:5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

B.  The Christian's Position Corporately................... 2:11-3:13

1. Reconciliation of Jews and Gentiles                                  2:11-22

Eph 2:11 Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;

Eph 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

2. Revelation of the Mystery of the Church............... 3:1-13

Eph 3:4 Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ)

Eph 3:5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;

IV. Prayer for Realization............................... 3:14-21

Eph 3:14 For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

Eph 3:19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.


 

Part Two: The Practice of the Christian (4:1-6:24)

I. Unity in the Church............................. 4:1-16

A.  Exhortation to Unity     4:1-3

Eph 4:1 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,

Eph 4:3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

B.  Explanation of Unity     4:4-6

Eph 4:4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;

Eph 4:5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism,

Eph 4:6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

C.  Means for Unity: The Gifts     4:7-11

Eph 4:11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

D.  Purpose of the Gifts     4:12-16

Eph 4:12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

II. Holiness in Life............................... 4:17-5:21

A.  Put Off the Old Man     4:17-22

Eph 4:22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

B.  Put On the New Man     4:23-29

Eph 4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

C.  Grieve Not the Holy Spirit     4:30-5:12

Eph 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

D.  Walk as Children of Light     5:13-17

Eph 5:14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.

E.  Be Filled with the Spirit     5:18-21

Eph 5:18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

III. Responsibilities in the Home and at Work........ 5:22-6:9

A.  Wives: Submit to Your Husbands     5:22-24

Eph 5:22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.

B.  Husbands: Love Your Wives     5:25-33

Eph 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

C.  Children: Obey Your Parents     6:1-4

Eph 6:1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.

D.  Service on the Job     6:5-9

Eph 6:5 Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ;

Eph 6:9 And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him.

IV. Conduct in the Conflict.............................. 6:10-24

A.  Put on the Armour of God     6:10-17

Eph 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

Eph 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

B.  Pray for Boldness     6:18-20

Eph 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

Eph 6:19 And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel,

C.  Conclusion . . . . 6:21-24
